Iranian Academic Describes Regional Goals After Recent Conflict

A Tehran University professor stated that Iran seeks changes to the regional security arrangement following recent conflict. He said Iran will not accept a return to pre-conflict conditions. The professor said Iran will not maintain friendly relations with Gulf states that maintain close ties with Israel. He added that Iran intends to impose fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The professor said U.S. military bases should be removed from the region. He described the view that the United States is overstretched and that existing alliances in the Gulf are divided. He stated that Iran believes the current global order is fragmenting in ways that could allow Tehran to outlast other actors.

The professor also said Iran views the Strait of Hormuz as non-negotiable for future shipping arrangements. The interview included additional points on Iranian expectations regarding payments for passage through the strait and relations with neighboring states.
