Dena Karari arrived in San Francisco on July 18 wearing an American flag around her shoulders. She had been detained in Iran since December 2024 and held for 566 days on espionage charges. Karari is an Iranian-American dual citizen who worked for a U.S.
Technology company and ran a charity for children in Iran. Iranian officials released her from prison but confiscated both of her passports, preventing her from leaving until clearance was granted. President Trump announced the release on July 15 on Truth Social.
"Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the 'presidency' of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country," he wrote. "She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. " Her attorney, Jared Genser, posted on X on July 19.
"Welcome home Dena Karari from Iran to the land of the free and the home of the brave— after 566 days wrongly detained by the Iranian regime," Genser wrote. "THANK YOU to all who made this day possible, known and unknown.
