Iranian President Visits Pakistan on First Trip Abroad Since Ceasefire

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian landed in Islamabad on Tuesday accompanied by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and a delegation. The visit marked his first trip abroad since the ceasefire that ended the 12-day war with Israel last year. Both governments described the meeting as ceremonial.

Pakistan's presidential office stated the visit reflected longstanding relations and a desire to maintain ties during good and bad times.

Pakistan's president expressed condolences for the death of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He also reaffirmed support for Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity and said Pakistan favors dialogue to resolve regional challenges.

Pezeshkian reviewed an honor guard and was greeted by an F-16 flyover during the arrival ceremony. The visit did not include discussion of new policy topics.

Ghalibaf has traveled to Pakistan, Qatar, and Switzerland since April. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has visited Pakistan, Oman, Russia, India, Qatar, China, and Switzerland since mid-April. A Pakistani official told Reuters in March that Pakistan urged the United States to prevent further Israeli strikes on remaining Iranian officials.
