Iranian and Swiss Foreign Ministers Meet Ahead of U.S.-Iran Talks in Switzerland

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock on Sunday. The meeting marked the first official engagement of the Iranian delegation after arriving in Switzerland for talks with U.S. officials.

Negotiations are expected to address Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, economic cooperation and regional security arrangements. The latest round follows a memorandum signed days earlier that laid the groundwork for broader talks intended to reduce tensions between the two countries. Pakistani and Qatari mediators are expected to participate in the discussions.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir also travelled to Switzerland to support the diplomatic process and hold consultations with participating delegations.

The United States and Iran have had no formal diplomatic relations since 1979. Previous agreements collapsed amid disagreements over compliance, verification and regional security concerns. Regional tensions have remained high due to conflicts involving Iran-backed groups across the Middle East, including in Lebanon.

International mediators hope progress in the Switzerland talks could help ease broader regional instability.
