Iraqi Prime Minister to Visit Washington for Oil and Gas Deals and Security Talks
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will travel to Washington on Monday to sign several memorandums of understanding in the oil and gas sector. The visit follows a U.S. invitation and will also address steps to strengthen Iraq's armed forces.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will visit Washington on Monday to sign several memorandums of understanding in the oil and gas sector. The agreements will bring U.S. companies into projects that expand Iraq's oil production capacity and establish new export outlets less vulnerable to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi said.

The visit follows an official U.S. invitation. Strengthening Iraq's armed forces will also be discussed, al-Aboudi said. Relations between Iraq and the U.S. have at times been strained over the presence of U.S.
Troops in Iraq, Baghdad's ties with Iran, and U.S. pressure on Iraq to curb the influence of Iran-backed armed groups. Al-Zaidi was nominated for the premiership in April 2026. President Trump congratulated him on the nomination and expressed hope for closer cooperation between Baghdad and Washington.
