The largest opposition party did not win either seat in the Irish by-elections held over the weekend. Its candidate in Dublin Central received the second-highest first-preference total but did not overtake the Social Democrats candidate. In Galway West the party's candidate received 3,208 first-preference votes.

The party's candidate, a sitting councillor, had been selected by local members despite an earlier report that the party leader preferred another nominee. The candidate benefited from transfers after an independent candidate was eliminated but still finished behind the Social Democrats.

The constituency contains both high-value residential areas and extensive social housing. Canvassers noted that some voters raised local maintenance issues while others focused on different priorities. The party leader stated after the count that no seat is easy to win.

West the party's candidate received far fewer first-preference votes than the party's sitting representative had obtained in the 2024 general election. Some local members declined to campaign because the candidate does not speak Irish, a language requirement in parts of the constituency that include Gaeltacht areas.

Party figures who spoke to BBC News NI said the party leader remains secure in the position. Media coverage has renewed questions about leadership after the Ard Fheis several weeks earlier, where the leader was re-elected.
