Irish Police Investigate Death of American Woman in Killarney as Murder

Jamey Carney, a 43-year-old New York native who moved to Ireland in 2021, was found dead at her home on Muckross Road in the Homeland housing estate in Killarney, County Kerry, on July 7. Irish police are investigating the death as a murder. A family member discovered the body at the residence Carney shared with her 13-year-old daughter.

A person of interest known to Carney left Ireland in the early hours of July 7 before the body was found. The individual took an early-morning bus from Killarney to Dublin Airport, roughly 200 miles away, then boarded a flight to Istanbul, according to The Irish Times.

Irish police have contacted airline and transport authorities, British police, immigration officials, Interpol, and Europol to trace the person of interest.

The individual is reported to be from the Middle East, an asylum seeker living in state-run accommodation in Killarney, and to have permission to remain permanently in Ireland. Police have not released the person's name, photograph, physical description, age, or nationality. They are appealing for CCTV or dashcam footage from anyone in the Muckross Road area between 11 p.m.

On July 6 and 5 a.m. on July 7. The U.S. State Department confirmed that an American citizen died in County Kerry on July 7 and is providing consular assistance to the family. Carney's sister and mother are in Ireland assisting investigators.

A post-mortem examination by state pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan determined that Carney died from suffocation after sustaining head injuries, The Irish Times reported.
