Israel announced the deaths of four of its soldiers. The combined casualty count is the highest since the United States and Iran signed their peace deal. The ceasefire forms part of the broader peace deal between the United States and Iran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the United States has a “commitment and responsibility” to ensure the deal is upheld on all fronts, including Lebanon. Tehran stated it is ready to move forward with diplomacy but insists Washington must guarantee Israel’s compliance. Israeli attacks continued in southern Lebanon after the ceasefire took effect.
The truce was brokered by Qatar, the United States, and Iran. The Trump administration announced a new round of talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington on June 23 and 25. Hezbollah has rejected the upcoming Washington talks.
