Israel Says It Will Not Withdraw From Security Zones Under Reported U.S.-Iran Deal

Israel's defense minister said the country will not withdraw from security zones in Lebanon, Syria, or Gaza even if a U.S.-Iran agreement is reached. The minister added that Israel must keep the ability to strike Iran on its own and has directed its military to prepare for that possibility.

Iran has asked that any deal require Israel to end all operations in Lebanon. A U.S. official made no reference to Lebanon when discussing the agreement.

Current Status The agreement has not been signed.

Israel is already stating it will reject parts of the reported terms. The defense minister's comments were made public hours before the planned U.S. announcement.
