Israel Police arrested two cousins, aged 16 and 20, from the Bedouin town of Al-Azazma in the Negev on suspicion of smuggling approximately 45 kilograms of hashish across the Egyptian border using a drone. The arrests took place during a targeted operation by the Southern Border Patrol Unit and its undercover unit along the border.
Police and IDF intelligence had identified the drone after it made several crossings and was observed landing in Israeli territory.
Officers watched the suspects remove a package from a vehicle, which was later confirmed to contain the hashish. The pair fled on foot but were quickly detained. A search of their vehicle recovered the drone, remote controls, and mobile phones, with materials indicating multiple flights over the border that day.
The two suspects are expected to be charged with importing a dangerous drug, endangering human life, and violating the state's sovereignty at the borders. The new offense, which carries a penalty of up to nine years in prison, has not previously been used in the Southern District. Both men were transferred to Southern District Police Headquarters for questioning.
