Israel’s Northern Border Shows Signs of Normalcy Despite Clashes With Hezbollah
Daily incidents continue along the Israel-Lebanon border under a ceasefire agreement, including drone attacks and Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Local communities in northern Israel have resumed daily activities with roads reopened and residents returning to the area. The Israel Defense Forces maintain a buffer zone inside Lebanon while reporting frequent operations against Hezbollah infrastructure.
israelnationalnews.comThe road to Arab al-Aramshe on Israel’s northern border consists of a series of switchbacks known as route 8993. It winds around hills leading to the border with steep ravines, rocky outcroppings and large caves, including Keshet near Kibbutz Adamit.
On May 9, 2026, the northern border remained on alert for possible escalation. Even though a ceasefire exists between Israel and Lebanon, daily clashes with Hezbollah continue. Hezbollah has used First Person View drones to attack troops. On May 6, Israel struck a commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan force in Beirut.
On May 8, Hezbollah fired rockets toward the Krayot area north of Haifa. No injuries or damage were reported. Security forces operated at the scene to neutralize the drone and transferred further handling to police. The targets included weapon storage facilities, launchers and structures used to advance activities against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Despite the exchanges, the northern border in Israel appears outwardly quiet. North of Nahariya on the road to Rosh Hanikra, cars are present and people look out over the Mediterranean coastline. The water appears turquoise in areas along the rocky shore.
Near Achziv, people are fishing at a former tourist beach. At Rosh Hanikra, a couple set up lawn chairs near a caravan and drank beer during the warm afternoon. Young men on motorcycles also traveled the area. The road passes through Shlomi, where rockets were fired at Israel during Passover in 2023.
During the war that began with the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, most of these border communities were evacuated. The roads, including route 8993, were largely restricted as military zones at that time. Arab al-Aramshe was an exception where some residents remained.
The roads are now open. Armored shelters are visible near bus stops and communities. The border fence has been reinforced into a wall. A stone near the Keshet cave commemorates Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, two Israeli soldiers killed and kidnapped by Hezbollah in 2006.
The Shi’ite communities on the Lebanese side, such as Ayta ash Shab, are currently empty. The anti-tank guided missile threat has ended for now and has been replaced by shorter-range FPV drones that use optic fiber tethers. Further inland, the route passes Shomera and descends to route 899, which goes through the Christian village of Fassuta and ends near Sasa.
Signs warn of falling rocks but carry no alerts for missiles. Mount Meron and Mount Adir are visible in the distance. Residents and the few tourists in the area appear to be resuming normal activities. On June 8, 2024, news broke in the same area of the rescue of Noa Argamani, Shlomi Ziv, Almog Meir Jan and Andrey Kozlov from Gaza.
All hostages are now home. In the Druze town of Hurfeish, the Israeli and Druze flags fly together outside a restaurant serving hamburgers. The lack of tourists remains noticeable in the region.
Hezbollah maintains its provocations using rockets and drones. The ceasefire has not ended these daily incidents along the border.
