The attack occurred amid ongoing exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, despite a ceasefire agreement.
More than 1.2 million people in Lebanon are projected to face acute food insecurity due to the war between Israel and Hezbollah. The report specifies that among Lebanese households, 725,000 people, or 19 percent, are expected to experience crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity.
It also notes that 362,000 Syrian refugees, or 36 percent, and 104,000 Palestinian refugees, or 45 percent, fall into this category. Newly arrived populations from Syria since 2024 are particularly affected, with around 50,000 people, or 52 percent, projected to face acute food insecurity.
The report indicates that the food security situation in Lebanon remains sensitive to shocks, driven by insecurity, displacement, disrupted livelihoods, uneven market access, rising inflation, and reduced humanitarian assistance. Without predictable aid, improved access, and stabilization of the security and economic environment, food insecurity is likely to deepen further, according to the report.
The U.S. aims to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and has negotiators working toward a deal. The U.S. must get Iran to the point of giving up its nuclear ambitions. U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities last year left them obliterated, but Iran retains nuclear ambitions and a conventional shield of thousands of missiles.
A Pentagon official reported that the war with Iran has cost $25 billion so far, primarily on munitions. The U.S. defense industrial base is being put back on a wartime footing. A congressman described the U.S. military strategy in Iran as incompetent and leading to a quagmire.
Such statements undermine U.S. troops and the mission. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh stated that war is not a solution to the crisis and that diplomacy is the only viable path forward. He added that Iran has put forward proposals for negotiations based on equal terms and conditions.
Talks between the U.S. and Iran have stalled, with both sides maintaining their core positions. The U.S. wants Iran to change its behavior now for benefits later, while Iran seeks benefits now in exchange for discussions later, particularly regarding a nuclear deal.
An analyst noted that the confrontation has been contained to the maritime domain, reducing the risk of severe miscalculation.
