Israeli Strikes in Southern Lebanon Cause Casualties; Hezbollah Employs Fiber Optic Drones; One Killed in Indianapolis Shooting
Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon killed 14 people over the weekend, including civilians, as the Israel Defense Forces issued evacuation orders for over ten villages. Hezbollah's use of fiber optic drones has caused multiple Israeli soldier casualties in recent attacks. Separately, a mass shooting at a post-prom party in Indianapolis left one woman dead and three injured early Sunday.
upi.comAccording to Lebanon's health ministry, Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday killed 13 people, including four women and a child. The Israel Defense Forces issued evacuation warnings on Sunday for residents in more than ten villages and towns, including Nabatieh, instructing them to leave their homes and move at least 1,000 meters to open areas.
The IDF also issued warnings over the weekend regarding risks to ten villages and towns north of the Litani River. A UN-brokered ceasefire signed on April 16 between Israel and Lebanon had halted fighting with Iran-backed Hezbollah, though hostilities have continued intermittently since the October 7 attacks, resuming in March.
Israeli forces maintain a security zone approximately five miles inside Lebanese territory. Aerial bombardments have resulted in more than 2,500 deaths in Lebanon, per Lebanese officials. Hezbollah has utilized fiber optic drones in the conflict, which connect the operator to the drone via a thin cable, eliminating radio emissions and complicating detection.
These drones carry a 5kg rocket-propelled grenade and have a range estimated at 10 to 30 kilometers. Hezbollah has employed drones for over 20 years, but the fiber optic models, similar to those used in Ukraine for two years, represent an adaptation.
Brigadier General Ran Kochav, former head of the Israeli air and missile defense command, stated that Hezbollah’s adoption of the technology was likely facilitated through Iranian channels or technical knowledge exchange.
Several Israeli servicemen have been killed in drone attacks in recent weeks. On April 26, Sergeant Idan Fooks, 19, was killed near the Lebanese village of al-Tayyiba when a fiber optic drone detonated among a group of soldiers. Six soldiers were wounded in the same incident.
As Fooks and the wounded were being evacuated by helicopter, a second fiber optic drone exploded nearby, missing the aircraft by meters.
A senior IDF officer described the drones as capable of destroying a Merkava tank, adding, “It’s the kind of equipment that you could buy in Schwarz’s toy shop in Manhattan.” On Friday, a drone struck an artillery site near the Israeli village of Shomera, hitting an M548 cargo carrier loaded with artillery shells, which amplified the explosion. Twelve soldiers were injured.
Hezbollah records strikes using first-person cameras on the drones and releases videos, including footage of soldiers’ final moments, set to music on its social media channels and Al-Manar television station. The IDF uses thermal imaging, noise detection systems, road nets, and vehicle-mounted cages to counter the drones.
Soldiers are equipped with shotguns using pellet spray to target moving drones.
According to a tweet from the account @FirstSquawk, the Israeli Army reported that its air force intercepted one missile while another fell in an open area, with no injuries reported in that incident.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday a deal to purchase two new combat squadrons of F-35 and F-15IA fighter aircraft. ” He added that he had given instructions weeks ago for a special project to address the drone threat.
Kochav noted that the government, in collaboration with the defense industry, is developing dedicated detection and interception systems that do not rely solely on electronic warfare.
In the United States, a shooting at a post-prom party in Indianapolis early Sunday killed one woman and injured three others. Police responded to reports of gunfire at a short-term rental property, where they found the woman critically wounded; she later died at a hospital. Two additional victims sought treatment at a nearby hospital, and all four were shot at the property.
According to police, a dispute among attendees preceded the shooting. The gathering involved juveniles and young adults, starting at another location before moving to the apartment. Several individuals asked to leave the original site arrived at the complex, attempted to enter, and opened fire using a rifle-style weapon.
Investigators believe two suspects, affiliated with the targeted location and known to one party occupant, used multiple weapons. Cartridge casings were recovered in a nearby alley, and a Glock 9mm handgun was found on a nearby landing. Amarillo Police Chief Thomas Hover stated that the suspects had an affiliation with the targeted location and that one of the party occupants knew them.
No arrests have been made as of the report.
The city has recorded 16 homicides in 2025 and ten in 2026, including two teens killed on May 2.
