An Israeli court extended the detention of two activists arrested aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla by another six days until May 10, 2026. Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish national, and Thiago Avila, a Brazilian, had their custody prolonged at the Ashkelon Magistrate’s Court after an initial extension until May 6.

The pair were detained by Israeli authorities on April 29, 2026, and brought to Israel, while more than 100 other pro-Palestinian activists from the boats were taken to the Greek island of Crete.

The activists formed part of the second Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza by delivering humanitarian assistance. The ships set sail from Barcelona on April 12, 2026, before Israeli forces intercepted them in international waters near Greece.

Court documents state that Israel accuses Abu Keshek and Avila of offences including aiding the enemy, contact with a foreign agent and a terrorist organization, prohibited activity involving a terrorist component, and providing means to a terrorist organization.

Judge Yaniv Ben-Haroush concluded there was reasonable suspicion after hearing arguments from both sides. 'I am convinced that there is reasonable suspicion,' he stated in granting the extension. No formal charges have been filed against Abu Keshek and Avila, with their detention intended for ongoing interrogation.

Lawyers for the human rights group Adalah argued during the hearing that the allegations against Abu Keshek and Avila were baseless and provided no legal grounds for continued detention. Adalah stated it would appeal the court's decision and demand the immediate and unconditional release of the two men. The group also said Abu Keshek and Avila had been tortured in custody.

Israel dismissed the charge that Abu Keshek and Avila had been tortured in custody. Separately, Global Sumud Flotilla activists returning home to Argentina said they were subjected to torture and mistreatment by Israeli forces who detained them at sea while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
