An Israeli drone strike killed Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Wishah on Saturday inside a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. Two other people died in the same strike. An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the strike and alleged that Wishah was a Hamas terrorist, though the spokesman did not provide evidence for the claim.
The military stated that it carried out a precise strike and said it would issue a further statement with additional details. Al Jazeera condemned the targeting of Wishah as deliberate. The network described the killing as a new and flagrant violation of international laws and norms and a continuation of a systematic policy of targeting journalists.
Ahmed Wishah was the 12th Al Jazeera media worker killed during the Gaza war, the network said. His brother and fellow Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Wishah was killed by Israeli shelling on 8 April while traveling in his vehicle, Palestinian civil defence authorities said at the time.
At least 260 Palestinian journalists have been killed since the war began in October 2023, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
