Israeli forces raised the national flag and a brigade flag at the Beaufort Ridge outpost on May 31. The outpost sits on a peak three miles from the Israeli town of Metula and overlooks settlements in northeastern Israel. The site was captured during the 1982 Peace for Galilee War. Officials said the latest operation took 966 days from the start of Hezbollah attacks on October 8, 2023.
Background to the Operation Hezbollah began rocket and drone attacks after October 7, 2023. Israel initially limited its response while managing casualties and hostage recoveries from the Gaza border. The border area inside Israel was evacuated, including Kiryat Shmona.
Officials referred to the evacuated zone as a Hezbollah-created security area. Israel began targeted operations against Hezbollah commanders in September 2024. A ceasefire took effect in November 2024 and another in April 2026.
A defense official stated that forces crossed the Litani River and captured the ridge, calling it a key defensive point. The same statement said the secrecy around the operation had been lifted to send a message to adversaries. Social media images showed the flags raised alongside comments from Lebanese accounts.
Officials said the campaign against Hezbollah would continue. The 36th Division, an armored unit based in northern Israel, participated in the operation along with the Golani Brigade.
