Israeli Lawmaker's Bill to Scrap Oslo Accords Goes to Ministerial Committee
Limor Son Har-Melech, deputy speaker of Israel’s Knesset, said a bill she is sponsoring to repeal the Oslo Accords will be reviewed on May 10, 2026 by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation. The proposal is described as a first step toward preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state and expanding Israeli settlements.
Limor Son Har-Melech, the deputy speaker of Israel’s Knesset, said a bill she is sponsoring to scrap the Oslo Accords will be reviewed today by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation. ” The Ministerial Committee for Legislation is made up of ministers and decides whether the government will support a bill.
The Oslo Accords are a series of interim documents signed between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in 1993 and 1995. They saw each side recognise the other for the first time and pledge to end their decades-long conflict. The accords allowed for limited self-governance for Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and were meant to ultimately lead to a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
The accords divided the occupied West Bank into three areas: Area A under Palestinian control, Area B under joint Israeli-Palestinian control, and Area C under Israeli control. Har-Melech said her bill would also promote the development of Israeli settlements in areas A and B.
Separately, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said two activists detained from a Gaza-bound flotilla have been deported. ” It added that Israel will not allow any breach of the naval blockade on Gaza. In central Gaza, an Israeli air strike targeted the al-Maghazi refugee camp, killing one person and wounding several others, Al Jazeera Arabic reported.
In southern Lebanon, Israeli strikes on May 9 hit areas including Saksakiyeh and Nabatieh, with residents and first responders searching rubble for victims.
Israelis protested overnight in Tel Aviv against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the ongoing attacks on southern Lebanon. General elections are expected later this year. One protester, David Alkan, an 83-year-old retiree, told Reuters the government was feeding the public with fake news and lies.
It was their first meeting in a bit over a year. The discussions focused on re-establishing relations and cooperation on issues related to the wider regional conflict and Israel’s campaign in Lebanon.
