The Israeli military on Sunday released two previously classified documents marking the 20th anniversary of the 2006 Second Lebanon War. The first document contains the general staff order, titled "Operation Just Remission," directing operations in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
It states that eight soldiers were killed and several others wounded during a Hezbollah attack on an IDF patrol near the villages of Shtoula and Zar'it on July 12, 2006. The same order notes that Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israeli communities, killing six civilians, and records preparations by the Israel Air Force to strike targets in Lebanon.
Expansion order The second document is an August 12, 2006 statement from the military spokesperson summarizing a cabinet decision to extend ground operations toward the Litani River. The stated objectives were to operate in areas used to launch rockets at Israel, reduce attacks on Israeli civilians, and increase damage to Hezbollah.
