Israeli and Palestinian civil society groups will meet in France later today to urge the international community not to abandon a two-state solution. Foreign ministers and senior officials from dozens of countries are expected to attend. The gathering marks one year since the UN-backed New York Declaration.
About a dozen countries, including France, Canada, and the UK, recognised a Palestinian state following the New York Declaration. France’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated on Thursday that the conference is now more essential and urgent than ever. The gathering will end with an eight-point “Call for Action”.
The eight-point plan urges a permanent ceasefire in the occupied Palestinian territory, a halt to illegal settlement construction by Israel, Gaza’s reconstruction, governance reforms, and stronger international backing for civil society.
