Israeli Satellites Photographed Iran Over 50,000 Times in 40-Day Operation Roaring Lion
The Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli satellites captured more than 50,000 images of Iran during the operation, averaging over 1,000 photos per day.
jns.orgIsraeli satellites photographed Iran over 50,000 times during the around 40-day Operation Roaring Lion, The Jerusalem Post reported on June 16, 2026. The volume equates to well over 1,000 photos per day of Iranian territory. The same reporting stated that the 50,000 images dwarf the around 12,000 satellite photos Israel took of Iran during the June 2025 war.
Those earlier images captured tens of millions of square kilometers; the recent collection likely covered more than a hundred million square kilometers, if not hundreds of millions. On April 9, the IDF released additional final statistics. It said it dropped 18,000 bombs over 38 days of the operation, roughly five times the number dropped during the 12-day June 2025 war.
The 18,000 bombs were delivered in 1,000 waves of aircraft that flew 8,500 sorties. Those sorties included around 10,800 attacks on approximately 4,000 different targets that collectively contained around 6,700 separate components. The pace of strikes was largely steady from mid-March onward.
In the early phase of the war, both Israel and the United States were each dropping or striking around 1,000 targets daily. US CENTCOM stated on April 6 that it had struck over 13,000 targets inside Iran. Israeli and American officials at times asserted they had struck more targets than the other, while each praised the counterpart air force.
For most of the operation the two countries divided responsibilities by region. Israel focused on western, northern, and central Iran, including Tehran, while the United States concentrated on southern Iran and the surrounding waterways.
