The military said the act involved placing a cigarette in the statue's mouth and occurred weeks earlier before photos were posted on social media. Officials stated that the military respects freedom of religion and worship. They added that procedures regarding conduct around sensitive sites are routinely reinforced to soldiers.
The incident marks the second such case in the village this year. In April a soldier who smashed a statue of Jesus in Debel was sentenced to 30 days in prison along with the soldier who photographed that act. Both soldiers were removed from combat duty.
Village residents declined the military's offer to replace the statue and instead installed an identical one with assistance from Italian troops.
Lebanon's health ministry reported that 74 people have been killed by Israeli strikes in the last three days. This comes despite a truce announced last month in the fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. The deaths include at least seven people killed in one strike on the southern town of Saksakiyeh.
The ministry said 2,869 people have been killed since the conflict reignited on March 2. That total includes 584 medics, women and minors though it does not specify how many were combatants. Some 1.2 million people have been displaced from their homes in Lebanon.
Lebanon's president urged the United States to pressure Israel to cease fire and stop home demolitions in southern Lebanon. The appeal came during a meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon. Israel has said its operations target Hezbollah militants embedded in civilian areas.
Washington is scheduled to host a third round of talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives on May 14 and 15. Lebanon's delegation will be led by its former ambassador to Washington. The talks represent the highest-level direct contacts between the two sides in decades.
The conflict reignited on March 2 when Hezbollah opened fire on Israel in support of Tehran. Hostilities have continued in southern Lebanon where Israel maintains a self-declared security zone. Israel reports 17 of its soldiers killed in the area along with two civilians in northern Israel.
“The military said it respects freedom of religion and worship, adding that it routinely reinforces procedures to soldiers regarding conduct around sensitive sites.”
Also in April soldiers were recorded destroying civilian solar panels in the village prompting a military investigation. A separate video from April 19 showed a soldier smashing a Jesus statue in the same location. Debel is a Maronite Christian village located roughly five kilometers from the Israeli border.
Lebanon has demanded security guarantees as part of broader proposals to end the wider regional conflict. The Israeli military launched an investigation after the latest desecration was publicized and concluded it warranted disciplinary action. Both soldiers involved in the Virgin Mary incident were identified and punished through the military justice process.
