An Israeli air strike killed Mohammad al-Waheidi, a senior Palestinian member of Egypt's main aid organization, along with three other people in a taxi in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood on Tuesday. The strike occurred on the eve of the Egypt-Argentina match. Medics said the victims also included two young siblings, aged 10 and 8, and 30-year-old Ahmed Jehad Rajab Doghmosh.
Hundreds of mourners attended al-Waheidi's funeral on Wednesday. His body was wrapped in Palestinian and Egyptian flags before burial. Neighbors and friends visited his home throughout the day. His son Fawaz told Reuters that his father had worked to bring football matches to people living in tents and damaged buildings.
It did not name the alleged militant or respond to a query about his identity. Two Egyptian security sources said a senior Egyptian official raised al-Waheidi's death with Israel and expressed opposition to continued assassinations and any obstruction of the aid committee's work.
Four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza since then. Hamas chief negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya arrived in Cairo on Thursday for further ceasefire talks. Israel and Hamas remain deadlocked over implementing the second phase of the deal, which covers the group's disarmament and Israeli army withdrawals.
