Israeli Strikes Hit Southern Lebanon as Washington Talks Set for June

Israeli aircraft struck targets in southern Lebanon on Monday, hitting the port city of Tyre seven times and the village of Mashghara in the Bekaa Valley, where 12 people were killed overnight. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted Hezbollah positions.

The Lebanese government reported that 3,185 people have died in Lebanon since Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel on March 2. Lilian Hawila, 29, said an Israeli military social-media post warned that al-Maashouq in Tyre would be hit, but the accompanying map placed the strike next to the house where she was staying.

She left before the adjacent building was destroyed. Israel also ordered residents of Nabatieh to evacuate on Tuesday.

Hezbollah said it struck three barracks and a military post in northern Israel on Monday. Israel has said it will not withdraw from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah disarms, while Hezbollah has said it will continue attacks until Israeli forces leave.

-brokered ceasefires. Israeli forces have used drones linked by fiber-optic cable to operators, a method that cannot be jammed electronically. Retired Lebanese army brigadier general Mounir Shehadeh said the drones created confusion inside the Israeli military because its defensive doctrine relies on electronic jamming.

Lebanese governments are scheduled to meet in Washington on June 2 and 3. Iran has said it wants any Lebanon agreement to be part of broader talks with the United States that would also address reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Hezbollah is designated a terrorist organization by several Western governments.
