Israeli air attacks struck several locations in southern and eastern Lebanon on May 17, killing at least five people and injuring more than a dozen. The Health Ministry reported the casualties. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said at least three additional people died in a separate strike on the village of Jouaiya.

Officials also issued forced displacement orders for residents in Sohmor, Roumine, al-Qusaibah, Kfar Hounah and Naqoura. The strikes followed a third round of talks in Washington where the two sides agreed to extend the ceasefire by 45 days. The original accord began on April 17 but has not been observed.

A Hezbollah legislator said the direct negotiations had led authorities down a dead-end path that would result in one concession after another. The group also reported striking a military target in northern Israel on Saturday. Since the war resumed on March 2, at least 2,988 people have been killed and 9,210 injured in Israeli attacks across Lebanon, according to the Health Ministry.
