A person displaying symptoms consistent with Ebola was transported to the infectious diseases unit at Santissima Trinità Hospital in Cagliari, Sardinia. Emergency responders wearing protective equipment collected the individual from a residence and transferred them under isolation procedures.

The Ministry of Health stated that the patient is symptomatic and had recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Laboratory tests are scheduled to be conducted by Rome’s Spallanzani Institute later in the evening.

As of 30 May, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 263 confirmed Ebola cases and 43 confirmed deaths across the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with more than 1,100 suspected cases. The director-general of Africa CDC noted that the affected region is under pressure and that the risk of regional spread is real.

Italy has recently dispatched experts from the Spallanzani Institute to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Officials in Rome have also proposed placing border management on the agenda of the European Council meeting scheduled for 18–19 June 2026.
