Italy Seizes Over 200 Million Euros in Assets Linked to Late Mafia Boss
Italian authorities announced the seizure of more than 200 million euros in property and financial holdings tied to the late Cosa Nostra leader Matteo Messina Denaro. The assets span eight countries and were traced to decades of drug trafficking.
foxnews.comItalian financial police said Thursday they are seizing more than 200 million euros in assets belonging to the late Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. The holdings include luxury resorts, bank accounts, securities and corporate entities spread across Italy and seven other jurisdictions.
The operation targeted proceeds from drug trafficking that investigators say were reinvested in the legal economy since the 1980s. Guardia di Finanza officers used aircraft, drones and thermal scanners to locate hidden assets during the probe.
Assets are being confiscated in Andorra, the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain and Switzerland, in addition to Italy. Twenty-two real estate properties were identified, many described as high-end vacation resorts on Spain's Costa del Sol between Marbella, Benahavis and Puerto Banus.
Eight foreign companies were also linked to the holdings and were used primarily for real estate investment and asset management. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
Denaro headed Sicily's Castelvetrano clan and carried six life sentences for crimes that included the 1992 murders of anti-Mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. He was also convicted of ordering the 1993 bombings in Rome, Florence and Milan and the kidnapping and murder of a 12-year-old boy.
He remained at large for 30 years after disappearing in 1993 and was arrested on January 16, 2023, while seeking cancer treatment under a false name at a Palermo clinic. He died in prison on September 25, 2023, at age 61. " — Giovanni Melillo, top anti-Mafia prosecutor, Thursday press conference in Palermo.
Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor Giovanni Melillo said the seizures carry strategic importance beyond financial recovery. He stated the action will also delay and hinder Cosa Nostra's efforts to rebuild its structure following Messina Denaro's death. The investigation continues to trace additional funds and properties that may have been moved through the identified corporate structures.
