Users spend an average of 78 minutes daily on top roleplaying AI apps, according to Sensor Tower. The company estimates that 70 to 80 percent of its users identify as women. One user, identified as Cookie, described using the service for character creation and story development after moving to a new city.

AI maintains content guidelines that permit certain explicit elements while restricting others, such as specific depictions involving digital avatars. The platform does not allow users under 18 to sign up. Its predecessor, Character AI, has faced lawsuits in Pennsylvania and Kentucky related to chatbot interactions.

Founder Jan Zoltkowski, a 26-year-old self-taught engineer, previously worked at cryptocurrency exchanges before developing the platform. The service draws from the broader romantasy publishing trend, where sales increased 50 percent in 2024 according to Circana.
