Japan issued 646 digital nomad visas in 2025, The Japan Times reported. The visa permits stays of up to 180 days for remote workers. Christian Mack, a 33-year-old web developer from Costa Rica now based in Berlin, landed at Haneda Airport during his first visit to Japan in early 2024.
“That thought crossed my mind almost as soon as I landed at Haneda Airport,” Mack said. ” Christopher Flinn works remotely from Tokyo. Japan tourism officials noted the country’s relatively cheap cost of living compared with other destinations and the weak yen as potential draws for young professionals.
For many remote workers, options have centered on beachside locations in Thailand or low-tax arrangements elsewhere. Japan had been viewed mainly through the lens of stricter immigration rules before the visa program expanded options for longer stays.
