The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for waves up to 10 feet along northern coastal areas, prompting residents to evacuate to higher ground. The Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed nuclear facilities in the region were intact with no abnormalities detected.
The event echoes a December 2025 quake of similar magnitude that injured dozens. It also occurs 15 years after the March 11, 2011, magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami that killed over 22,000, displaced nearly 500,000, and caused radiation leaks at Fukushima Daiichi. About 26,000 people from Fukushima have not returned due to resettlement, off-limits areas, or radiation concerns.
Authorities cautioned about possible aftershocks for about a week and advised staying away from coasts and rivers. Street lights rattled, and household items shook during the quake, as described in reports. The government continues assessing the situation, with no major incidents reported so far.
