Japan will raise fees for foreign nationals seeking to change or renew their status of residence and for those applying for permanent residency beginning October 1. The government released draft guidelines outlining the new fee structure on Thursday.
Foreign nationals currently pay ¥6,000 when applying in person to change their status of residence or renew their period of stay. The fee for permanent residence permission is ¥10,000. The amended immigration law passed in May raised the statutory ceiling on these fees, allowing the increases scheduled for October.
The fee adjustments come as Japan has also tripled its departure tax in an effort to address overtourism. Some foreign residents have reported difficulties under updated visa rules.
