Japan TimesJapan’s internal affairs ministry released an online visualization tool on June 13, 2026, that displays revenues, expenditures and fiscal indicators for prefectural and municipal governments through graphs and color-coded maps. The dashboard of regional fiscal data was developed in collaboration with the Digital Agency.
It allows users to compare local government entities and generate maps showing spending by category such as civil engineering and education costs.
A version containing data on municipalities was released in April 2026. A version containing data on prefectural governments followed in May 2026. The dashboard can display changes in local governments’ real balance of revenues and expenditures and their financial strength index readings in a graph.
Users can also compare similar local governments using data on the rate of population aging and the financial strength index. The tool utilizes data from the government’s survey on local fiscal conditions for fiscal 2024, which will be updated every April.
“Users can see at a glance which fields their local government and neighboring local governments are spending money on,” a ministry official said.
