Eight crested ibises were released into the wild on Honshu, Japan's main island, on Sunday. The Japanese crown prince and princess attended a ceremony commemorating the release. It had been more than a half-century since the last such wild creature flew freely on the island.

Background on the Species The crested ibis, known as "Toki" in Japanese, was once native to Japan, China, Korea and Russia. References to the birds appeared in Japanese historical texts as far back as the eighth century, including in the ancient text "Nihon Shoki," or "Chronicles of Japan," written in 720.

The birds' name, written with characters meaning "peach-flower bird," appeared on imperial tombs, and their feathers figured in certain important ceremonies. Once widespread in Japan, the birds went from being fairly commonplace to being on the verge of extinction.

They are now seen as a symbol of successful conservation efforts and of international diplomacy.
