Japan to Require My Number Cards or Certificates for Insured Medical Care Starting August 2026

Conventional health insurance cards will no longer be accepted at medical institutions in Japan starting in August, The Japan Times reported, as the government’s grace period for expired cards ends July 31. Patients must instead use a My Number card registered for health insurance use or a special certificate to receive insured medical treatment.

Those whose insurance status cannot be confirmed at the time of treatment must pay the full medical bill upfront rather than the usual copayment based on age and income.

Patients who have registered their My Number cards for health insurance use should present either the card or a smartphone with My Number card functions added when visiting medical institutions or buying prescription drugs, according to the report.
