Japan and South Korea Resume Limited Search-and-Rescue Drills After Six-Year Hiatus

Japanese and South Korean navies conducted a joint search-and-rescue exercise on Sunday in waters west of the Goto Islands. The Maritime Self-Defense Force dispatched its Kongo destroyer and an SH-60K helicopter. The South Korean Navy sent its Cheon Ja Bong landing ship.
The Maritime Self-Defense Force announced the training on Monday. The drills marked the first joint exercise since December 2017. Rescue exercises between the two services began on a regular basis in 1999.
The exercises had been suspended after a 2018 incident in which a South Korean naval vessel directed its fire-control radar at an MSDF plane. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the resumption signals “a new chapter” in bilateral defense cooperation. The Maritime Self-Defense Force described the drills as a key sign of warming ties between the neighbors’ militaries.
