Rintaro Sasaki announced on Sunday that he will sign with the Miami Marlins after the team selected him in the eighth round of the MLB draft last week. The 21-year-old first baseman from Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, made the decision during a news conference in his hometown.
Sasaki was the 235th overall pick in the MLB draft, carrying a slot value of $239,200, or just under ¥39 million, according to MLB.com. The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks had selected him in the first round of the NPB draft in October and were reportedly prepared to offer him upwards of ¥150 million.
