Jeffrey Epstein Found Unresponsive in Cell on July 23, 2019
Cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione described multiple prior suicide attempts by Epstein inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center before his death on August 10.
nypost.comM. Guards discovered him lying motionless on the floor with an orange fabric noose hanging loosely around his neck. Epstein had been awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
A judge denied him bail after roughly two weeks in custody. Four days after the bail denial, on July 22, 2019, Epstein wrote “J’ACCUSE” on a sheet of paper. ” Tartaglione stated he discovered Epstein preparing for suicide at least two times before the July 23 incident.
One attempt involved Epstein trying to tie a sheet to a grate above a cell window. Tartaglione also found a noose under Epstein’s mattress on another occasion. On July 22, 2019, Tartaglione was sleeping with his mattress on the floor and wearing headphones when he felt a bump against his legs.
He said Epstein was seated with his back against the bunk bed with a noose around him. Tartaglione cut Epstein down with a razor and performed chest compressions. When guards arrived, Epstein was still breathing but unresponsive.
Epstein was handcuffed, placed on a stretcher, and taken to an observation cell near the jail psychologist’s office. He remained there for the rest of the night. Officers fitted him with a rip-proof, anti-suicide smock after the incident.
Epstein died on August 10, 2019.
