Jerusalem International Writers Festival Set for May 25-28 at Mishkenot Sha'ananim
The annual event will feature authors including Erri De Luca, Nell Zink, Joseph Finder, Steven J. Zipperstein, Dara Horn, and Marcelo Birmajer. Organizers have noted fewer foreign participants in recent years.
The program includes Italian author Erri De Luca, whose 2001 novel Montedidio sold well in Israel. De Luca has received multiple literary awards and has studied biblical Hebrew. American authors on the roster are thriller writer Joseph Finder, historian Steven J.
Zipperstein, and novelist Dara Horn. Argentinian author Marcelo Birmajer is also scheduled; his brother was killed in a 2015 attack in Jerusalem.
Zink, who lived in Tel Aviv for three years and is married to an Israeli academic, will close the festival on May 28. She will appear with Israeli writer Sharon Kantor to discuss contemporary American literature and the influence of her time in Germany.
Zink said her early published work was written while she spoke English mainly with family and U.S. contacts. She noted that reading choices affect her prose style more than spoken language influences. The author also discussed birds as indicators of ecosystem health, a theme in her 2014 novel The Wallcreeper.
She said she last visited Israel in January and observed birds at the Hula Nature Reserve.
