A jet ski and a small boat breached the security zone at the Sail4th 250 event on Saturday, nypost.com reported. Video showed the two personal watercrafts moving toward the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge while Tall Ships sailed nearby and the US Coast Guard pursued them. The bridge marked the start of the Parade of Sails at 9:30 a.m.
The parade was set to travel up the Hudson River toward the George Washington Bridge. A strict exclusionary zone for recreational vessels began at that point. The US Coast Guard ordered the Jersey Girl ferry to steer clear after it approached the parade channel.
The ferry carried 150 passengers who had paid $200 each for tickets. The Coast Guard made no arrests and issued no violations during the event. A spokesperson stated that crews interacted with the public to keep vessels outside the enforced zones.
The spokesperson added that those contacted were cooperative and responded to commands to vacate the area.
