JetBlue returned to Charlotte Douglas International Airport for the first time since 2024 to offer $99 fares to travelers stranded by Spirit Airlines' closure. The airline announced these rescue fares on Saturday, available until May 6 for customers whose Spirit flights were canceled.

JetBlue stated the fares aim to assist stranded travelers with immediate travel plans. Spirit Airlines announced early Saturday that it was going out of business effective immediately after failing to secure a $500 million bailout from the federal government.

The company promised refunds to inconvenienced customers but is not helping them book travel with other airlines. Customers who booked through travel agents or third-party vendors must seek refunds from those providers.

Spirit's shutdown, ticket prices across airlines increased as travelers rebooked. Some single tickets reached as high as $500. JetBlue announced increased service at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which was Spirit's main hub. JetBlue also added service to six cities, including Charlotte, North Carolina; Indianapolis; Columbus; and Baltimore.

These locations will have daily flights to Fort Lauderdale starting later in the year. JetBlue pulled out of Charlotte in 2024 due to lack of customer demand.

JetBlue plans to extend interview opportunities to qualified Spirit employees affected by the shutdown. An estimated 17,000 employees lost their jobs when Spirit began closing on Saturday. JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty said the airline got to know many Spirit crewmembers during acquisition talks and wants to help fill the void created by the loss.
