A JetBlue Airways pilot reported colliding with a drone at approximately 3,000 feet while on approach to land at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday morning. The flight had departed from Las Vegas and was nearing the ASALT waypoint when the pilot informed air traffic control that no assistance was required and the approach could continue.
The aircraft landed safely at JFK without further incident. Post-flight inspections by JetBlue and the FAA found no damage and no physical evidence of a collision. The FAA stated it will investigate the reported incident.
A JetBlue spokesperson stated that safety is the airline’s first priority and that it will assist with any relevant investigations. The FAA receives more than 100 reports of drone sightings near airports each month. Unauthorized drone operations near airports are illegal and may result in fines, criminal charges, or jail time.
The New York Post reported that a separate drone encounter involving a United Airlines flight occurred at Newark International Airport on the preceding Friday.
