Former first lady Jill Biden's forthcoming book describes how Joe Biden received a Stage IV prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2024 after months of nighttime symptoms. The account appears in "View From the East Wing," scheduled for publication Tuesday by Gallery Books. In the year before the Bidens left the White House, Joe Biden began waking up repeatedly at night.

Jill Biden alerted one of his male doctors after he was up seven times in a single night. The White House residence maintains a fully staffed twenty-four-hour doctor's office. Joe Biden underwent his annual physical at Walter Reed Medical Center on February 28, 2024.

Symptoms persisted after that exam. Joe Biden visited Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia for a urologist appointment. During the first examination the doctor said, "There's something here.

A biopsy followed on May 15, 2024. The same day, the urologist called to report that Joe Biden had cancer. A PET scan performed at Jefferson Hospital the next day showed the cancer had spread to his bones.

The doctor who delivered the results repeated "I'm sorry" multiple times. S. is about seventy-six years.

A press statement about the diagnosis was released on May 18, 2024. Joe Biden underwent a bone density test on May 21 and began hormone therapy on May 22. The therapy produced fatigue and moodiness. Jill Biden notes that one in eight men receive a prostate cancer diagnosis in their lifetime and that the disease is highly treatable when found early.

She lists John Kerry, Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Colin Powell, and Warren Buffett among men successfully treated for the condition. She writes that she had previously cared for both her parents, both of Joe Biden's parents, and their son Beau during major illnesses.
