Jim Furyk, captain of the US Ryder Cup team for a second time, said the organization must make the biennial competition a greater priority year-round. He indicated he plans to seek input from Tiger Woods for his backroom staff.
espn.comJim Furyk, captain of the US Ryder Cup team for a second time, said the United States needs to make the Ryder Cup more of a priority. Furyk spoke expansively for the first time since being handed the US captaincy for the 2027 matches at Adare Manor in Ireland.
He pointed toward an overhaul of the team's approach to the biennial event. Furyk said his immediate focus is on winning the 2027 competition on foreign soil, a feat the US has not achieved in a long time. The US has won two of the past eight Ryder Cup stagings, with the most recent victory coming before Europe's win at Bethpage last year.
"We have the talent to be able to do that," he said. Furyk added that he intends to create a longer-term blueprint with more continuity for players and future captains. "We really need to start making the Ryder Cup more of a priority each and every year, year in and year out," Furyk said.
He stated that his job is to create a culture and chemistry among the players. Furyk indicated he will seek input from Tiger Woods, who had been considered for the captaincy before a car crash in Florida in March made that impossible. Furyk has not yet spoken to Woods, who is taking time away from golf for treatment.
"I will definitely" reach out, Furyk said, noting that Woods previously served as a vice-captain and brought knowledge and experience to the team room.
He compared the situation to brothers who fight but ultimately share a clear mission. The US PGA Championship at Aronimink in Pennsylvania is underway, with focus also on Rory McIlroy's preparation after a blister affected his toe. Furyk is a native of Pennsylvania and is attending the event.
Furyk previously served as captain when the US team lost in Paris in 2018. He said he has an abundance of ideas on how to improve results for the US team at Adare Manor in September 2027.
