Jim Perdue Grew Perdue Farms Tenfold Since 1991
Jim Perdue took over Perdue Farms in 1991 and expanded the company from roughly $1 billion in sales to $9.2 billion in 2025 revenue. He shifted focus to organic and antibiotic-free products while maintaining family ownership.
uctoday.comJim Perdue has led Perdue Farms for 35 years, growing the poultry company from about $1 billion in sales when he took over in 1991 to $9.2 billion in 2025 revenue. The family-owned business is now the fourth-largest chicken producer in the United States and the largest organic chicken producer with more than 30 percent market share.
Perdue Farms also became the largest organic soybean oil producer in the country, manufacturing over 500 million pounds annually, and one of the largest grain traders with more than $2 billion in annual grain volume. The company owns Niman Ranch and Coleman, which together make it one of the largest producers of pasture-raised meat.
Perdue left the company in 1974 at age 25 to pursue marine biology and oyster farming. His father, Frank Perdue, later gave him an ultimatum to return or the business would be sold. He rejoined in an entry-level role and advanced through production and sales positions.
Frank Perdue died in 2005. Jim Perdue became chairman and CEO in 1991 and replaced his father as the company spokesperson in advertisements. A market research study indicated the public would accept an heir in that role if the person worked in the business.
2002 and 2016, Perdue Farms transitioned all of its chicken farms to antibiotic-free production. The company reduced livestock density and improved ventilation and lighting on farms. Perdue says these steps produce a tastier product and support higher prices than competitors.
Forbes estimates the company's EBITDA profit margin exceeds 15 percent, compared with 6 percent at Tyson and 7 percent at Pilgrim's Pride. The family retains 100 percent ownership and has paid dividends since 2005 to maintain unity among approximately 50 family members.
Perdue Farms is currently run by Kevin McAdams, the third CEO from outside the family. Fourth-generation member Chris Oliviero serves as senior vice president for commercial strategy and business planning.
