The production stars Nathan Lane as Willy Loman and Laurie Metcalf as Linda Loman. It also features Christopher Abbott and Ben Ahlers as Willy's sons, Biff and Happy.
Mantello described the production as the most challenging project he has undertaken. He stated that he needed time to recover after its opening. The director has previously worked on shows such as Wicked and The Humans.
The staging sets the play in a garage with a 1964 Chevy Chevelle as a central element. Mantello said this design reflects the play's abstract nature and takes place inside Willy's mind. He noted that the script frequently references cars, which influenced the choice.
Mantello worked with designer Chloe Lamford to develop the concept over a year. He explained that scenes from different time periods occur simultaneously, without nostalgia. Elements like contemporary clothing and props appear in some scenes to update the setting.
The director stated that the play feels modern and speaks to current audiences, including issues like layoffs. He aimed to present it as if newly written in 2026.
Mantello first mentioned directing Lane in the role over 30 years ago during their work on Love! Valour! Compassion!. At the time, Lane was in his 30s. They later collaborated with Metcalf on David Mamet's November. Lane's performance draws comparisons to a vaudevillian or song-and-dance man.
Metcalf portrays Linda as shrewd and steely. Mantello noted that Lane felt pressure due to previous actors like Brian Dennehy, George C. Scott, Lee J. Cobb, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Wendell Pierce, and Dustin Hoffman who played Willy. Mantello encouraged Lane to create his own version of the character.
He stated that the role can be interpreted in multiple ways.
The revival is produced in association with Scott Rudin, who also worked on the Broadway transfer of Little Bear Ridge Road last fall. Mantello addressed his decision to collaborate with Rudin, stating, 'I believe in second chances.' The play originated in 1949 and has had seven Broadway productions. Mantello aimed to add to the lineage by emphasizing abstraction.
“I’m just trying to make sense of what we all just went through. It’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever done.”
