Joel Embiid Expresses Frustration with 76ers Over Playing Decision, Sits Out Against Pistons
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid stated he was frustrated with team management for not allowing him to play against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, despite his intention to participate. He played in Friday's win over the Minnesota Timberwolves but was ruled out for Saturday's game against the Detroit Pistons due to right oblique injury management and illness.
EspnPHILADELPHIA -- Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers will not play in Saturday's game against the Detroit Pistons. The team listed him as out due to right oblique injury management and illness. Embiid has not played in both games of a back-to-back set this season.
Embiid expressed frustration after the 76ers' 115-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. He said he was angry with team management for not allowing him to play against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. Embiid had responded to a social media post listing him as out by indicating he planned to play, later posting, "I guess they won't let me play basketball."
Embiid directed his comments toward Daryl Morey, the 76ers president of basketball operations. "I was pissed off. I wanted to play basketball," Embiid said. "I wasn't allowed to play basketball, so I think this is more of a question of Daryl Morey or whoever makes the decisions."
Prior to the Wizards game, Embiid had scored 26 points in 34 minutes during a loss to the Miami Heat on Monday. He was not on the injury report that day but reported feeling ill and not physically prepared. Embiid described a short night's sleep before the Wizards game and missing a morning film session, learning of his exclusion online.
Embiid was listed as doubtful for Thursday's game against the Timberwolves but played 34 minutes, recording 19 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Sixers coach Nick Nurse addressed the situation before Saturday's game, stating he was not concerned. Nurse noted Embiid's participation in shootaround and his performance on Friday, emphasizing a focus on basketball matters.
Embiid has played in 37 games this season, missing time primarily due to knee injury management. He strained his right oblique on February 26 against the Miami Heat, leading to 13 missed games. The 32-year-old center's absences affect the 76ers' playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, where consistent availability from key players like Embiid is critical for postseason success.
The 76ers face the Pistons on Saturday night at home. Embiid's status for upcoming games will depend on medical evaluations and team decisions regarding his injury management. The franchise continues to balance player health with competitive demands as the regular season progresses toward the playoffs.
