The Rugby Football League stated that he "was loved and admired throughout the sport and well beyond". His coaching career spanned more than 700 matches. Kear guided Sheffield Eagles to a Challenge Cup final victory over Wigan in 1998.
Kear also led Hull FC to a Challenge Cup triumph in 2005, beating Leeds Rhinos in the final at Cardiff. " Kear coached the England team at the 2000 World Cup and led them to the semi-finals. He spent 11 years in charge of Wales and led them at the 2017 and 2021 World Cups.
Kear made 133 appearances for Castleford between 1978 and 1988. He was born in Castleford on Wheldon Road and made his debut for the club against St Helens at Knowsley Road on 1 October 1978. He was part of the 1986 Challenge Cup winning squad as Mal Reilly's assistant.
Castleford Tigers stated that after his 10-year playing career at the club, Kear "found his passion for coaching". Nigel Wood, chair of the Rugby Football League, said Kear "was also an excellent broadcast summariser with a great turn of phrase and an undiluted love and positivity for the sport".
