Joshua Wong Due in Hong Kong Court September 2 for National Security Plea and Sentencing

Joshua Wong is scheduled to appear for a plea and sentencing hearing on September 2 in a Hong Kong national security case. The hearing listed on the judiciary website is expected to last one day. Wong was arrested in June 2025 on suspicion of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security.

He is accused of conspiring with Nathan Law and others between July 1 and November 23, 2020, to ask foreign countries, institutions or individuals to impose sanctions, blockades or other hostile actions against Hong Kong or China. The offense carries a prison term of three to 10 years, or up to life imprisonment if deemed of a grave nature.

This marks the second time Wong has been charged under the national security law introduced by Beijing in 2020.

In 2024 Wong pleaded guilty in a separate national security case linked to an unofficial primary election and received a sentence of four years and eight months. Wong rose to prominence in 2012 as a high school student leading protests against national education in schools.

He later became known as a leader of the 2014 Occupy Movement and co-founded the political party Demosisto in 2016 with Law and other activists.

The group disbanded after Beijing imposed the security law in 2020. Hong Kong authorities have offered rewards of 1 million Hong Kong dollars for information leading to the arrests of Law, who moved to Britain, and other overseas-based activists. Last month a London court sentenced a former UK border official and a retired Hong Kong police officer to prison for spying on dissidents and critics of Beijing in Britain, with targets that included Law.
