Judge Reduces Sentence for Driver in Fatal Oxford Crash
A Mississippi judge has shortened the prison term for a man convicted in a 2022 hit-and-run that killed one University of Mississippi student and injured another. The reduction was granted after nine months of incarceration.
New York PostA judge in Mississippi has amended the sentence of a driver convicted in a fatal 2022 hit-and-run crash in Oxford, reducing his prison term by nine years. Seth Garron Rokitka, 30, will be released after serving less than one year of a 10-year sentence.
The original term was imposed after he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident causing death and aggravated DUI. The crash occurred in the early morning hours of October 16, 2022, in downtown Oxford. Rokitka struck two University of Mississippi students, killing 21-year-old Walker Fielder and injuring 20-year-old Blanche Williamson.
The judge stated that Rokitka was worthy of reconsideration due to his rehabilitation, treatment, and conduct while incarcerated. Under the new terms, Rokitka must maintain a clean record, serve five years of probation, and complete 50 years of community service.
Rokitka was arrested the day after the crash and remained in custody until the sentence reduction. The amended order was issued after he requested a review of his punishment. Fielder was pronounced dead at the scene. Rokitka turned himself in the following day and later entered the guilty plea that led to his original sentence.
