Julius Malema was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Thursday after being convicted in October on five counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharge of a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment. The charges stemmed from an incident in 2018 at a political rally in the Eastern Cape province, where Malema fired a rifle.

Magistrate Twanet Olivier delivered the sentence in a court in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London.

She stated that she considered the magnitude of the offense when determining the sentence, emphasizing the dangers posed by such actions. Olivier noted, "We hear daily, or weekly, of children playing in the front yards, in the street, who are caught in crossfire, random shots fired, killing people. " Anton Snyman was charged alongside Malema but was found not guilty.

Malema, who leads the Economic Freedom Fighters party, has stated that the charges against him were politically motivated, asserting that they were brought by Afriforum, a lobby group for the white Afrikaner minority. The Economic Freedom Fighters is the fourth-largest party in South Africa's parliament.
