June 8 earthquake lifts Sarangani coast up to 200 meters

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore south of the Sarangani Peninsula on June 8, 2026, and produced measurable uplift along several coastal villages. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the quake resulted from slip on a thrust fault within the Cotabato subduction zone.

Satellite interferometry from international observatories detected the greatest upward movement in Glan, Sarangani province, and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

Uplift mechanism Thrust faults occur when the upper block of an inclined fault plane is driven upward. At plate-boundary scale, the same motion forms deep ocean trenches and generates the vertical displacement recorded after large subduction-zone earthquakes.

Ground-based surveys and satellite data confirmed that former seabed in villages such as Pangyan, Burias, and Kitayo now lies above the previous high-tide line. The shoreline receded as much as 200 meters in places.

Tsunami distinction A receding shoreline can precede a tsunami, yet the two processes differ in duration. Tsunami-related drawdown lasts minutes; uplift-related recession persists until the next major earthquake. Officials stated that no immediate tsunami threat exists from the observed uplift. Residents were advised that the new land position is stable barring another significant seismic event.
